Back to the Future Car
From LoveToKnow Cars
For many fans of the Back to the Future movies, the DeLorean is one of the most iconic cars ever produced, and even today, the vehicle continues to be known as the Back to the Future car. The stainless-steel clad vehicle had a major role in the popular movie trilogy as the time machine that took Marty McFly and Doc Brown to both the past and the future.
About the DeLorean
At the time the first Back to the Future movie released in 1985, production of the DeLorean DMC-12 had already stopped. The DMC-12 was the only vehicle ever made under the DeLorean name and manufactured for sale in the United States between 1981 and 1982. The purchase price of a new DeLorean was between $12,000 and $25,000.
The Irish-made DeLorean had many features that made it unique and easily distinguishable from other exotic vehicles:
- The car featured graceful gull-wing doors, which open vertically to allow entrance and exit from the vehicle.
- The stainless steel body panels of the car gave it a luminous and eye-catching appearance.
- The car boasted a lightweight fiberglass body beneath the stainless steel exterior.
The DeLorean was a largely unsuccessful manufacturing venture. Reviewers of the car considered it sluggish, and production of the vehicle proved to be very expensive. Damaged body panels could not easily be repaired and had to be completely replaced. They only built about 9,000 DeLorean DMC-12s.
DeLorean as the Back to the Future Car
They selected the DeLorean as the time machine in Back to the Future because of its futuristic appearance. In one scene of the first Back to the Future movie, the car was mistaken for an alien spacecraft, and speculation is that they chose the DeLorean because of this scene.
Modifications for the Movies
Six DeLorean cars were in the production of the Back to the Future movies. The resulting image of the car in the films featured several significant modifications from the standard DeLorean.
- For Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III, they replaced the original engine of the car with a Porsche engine to improve performance.
- They installed coils and an imitation nuclear reactor on the back of the vehicle, along with two large rear vents.
- A number of lights and buttons made the interior of the car appear more complex.
- They added the "flux capacitor" to the vehicle between the two headrests. According to the movie, this device actually makes it possible to travel through time.
- In Back to the Future Part II, Doc added the Mr. Fusion energy reactor to the car to power the time circuits.
Other Trivia About the Car and the Trilogy
- The Back to the Future car featured a license plate that read "OUTATIME." After Doc took the car to the future in Part II of the series, they replaced the license plate with a bar code.
- While the time machine in the movie must reach 88 mile per hour to function, the actual speed gauge on the DeLorean car only goes up to 85 miles per hour.
- To give the appearance that the DeLorean is very cold after traveling through time, the production crew poured liquid nitrogen all over the exterior of the car during filming.
The Future of the DeLorean
The DeLorean Motor Company has begun offering a "New Build" program. This program allows fans of the vehicles to own a new vehicle that is constructed from existing DeLorean parts stock and new manufactured parts.
The new vehicles are available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission and feature many current technological advances like heated seats, satellite radio, back-up cameras, and i-Pod interfaces. The new DeLoreans start at under $60,000.
For fans of the movie trilogy, these new DeLoreans offer an exciting chance to own an updated version of the Back to the Future car.
