Canadian Used Car Values
From LoveToKnow Cars
There are many online sources for finding Canadian used car values. Like Kelley Blue Book in the United States, VMR Canada is a great tool to find the value of a used car. While it is free to use, VMR Canada, like many other online websites, will charge you a fee to join.
Canadian Used Car Values
Using VMR Canada
VMR Canada offers used car values for models from 1994 to 2008. Once you enter the website, in order to find a vehicle’s value you must select the make, like Chrysler, and the model year. Next you can choose from all the Chrysler models, such as the Chrysler Pacifica. Finally you will be directed to a page that allows you to add or deduct options to calculate both a wholesale and retail price.
Wholesale vs. Retail
Many consumers are confused by wholesale and retail prices. Retail prices are what you can purchase the car for at a dealership or used car lot and what a finance company or bank will lend you on that used car. A wholesale price is what you can expect a dealership or used car lot to offer you for your trade-in. Obtaining the wholesale value of a car you want to trade-in is essential before visiting the dealership.
Researching Canadian Cars
VMR Canada also offers a research tool that includes reviews for some manufacturer makes and models; more are added each month. Each review covers the exterior and interior of the vehicle as well as handling, comfort, safety, reliability, and servicing. A summary of each review wraps up each model. You’ll also find links to Canadian motoring services as well as a link to CarFax to get a vehicle history report. Keep in mind if you use the CarFax tool, you must have the vehicle identification number or VIN to run the report.
Other Used Car Websites for Canada
- Canadian Car Prices – This is a used car value website that requires you to join and pay a monthly fee for an annual membership. This site utilizes the Canadian Black Book which, if financing a car in Canada, most banks or finance companies use to determine loan value.
- Canadian Black Book – This is also a pay to join website that allows you to research used car values. The website doesn’t offer you a price to join but instead asks you call them at 1-800-562-3150 to inquire about joining.
- BCAA – If you’re a member of the British Columbia Automobile Association or BCAA, you’ll get free access to the Canadian Black Book by entering your BCAA membership number.
Which Website is Best?
VMR Canada is free and offers a lot of information, but if you are financing a vehicle through a bank or finance company, they usually request the Canadian Black Book value. Dealerships and used car lots usually have access to the Canadian Black Book so it’s really not necessary to pay to join a website to obtain a car’s value. VMR Canada is a great resource that offers prices, reviews, and informational links.
Before you visit the dealership or used car lot, arm yourself with a VMR Canada report and if they say they will only use a Canadian Black Book report, chances are the value you have and the value they get will be similar if not exact. Unless you plan to buy and sell used cars for a living, choose the free source to determine Canadian used car values.
