Learning to Drive Manual Cars

From LoveToKnow Cars

Whether it’s an item on your bucket list of things to do in your life or it’s simply necessary because of a new car purchase, learning to drive manual cars is fun and practical. With the right instructions, a supportive friend, and a lot of patience, anyone can learn this useful skill.

How is a Manual Different From an Automatic?

The main difference between automatic and manual cars is the way the car shifts gears. In an automatic transmission, the car takes care of the shifting. However, in a manual transmission, the driver must use the gear shifter and the clutch pedal to select and change gears.

Regardless of how your car changes gears, shifting is part of driving. As you increase speed or rev your engine, the number of revolutions per minute (RPM) also increases. Most cars achieve optimal power and fuel consumption between 2000 and 3500 RPM. As the RPMs increase, the engine starts to work too hard. Especially high RPMs can be dangerous for your engine. Changing gears allows your car to continue moving faster without reaching those dangerous RPM levels.

Important Terms

Before you get behind the wheel of a 5-speed, it helps to know some basic terminology. For the most part, the inside of a stick shift transmission looks the same as the interior of an automatic, but there are a few subtle and important differences:

  • Clutch Pedal: This pedal is located on the driver’s left, and it is operated with the left foot. Pushing in the clutch pedal allows you to change gears.
  • Gear Shifter: The knob located in your car’s center console area is the gear shifter. When driving a manual car, you need to use this knob to change gears or put your vehicle in neutral.
  • Tachometer: The tachometer is a gauge that shows you the current RPMs of your engine. The red area of the tachometer shows you when the RPMs are dangerously high.

Tips for Learning to Drive Manual Cars

Ready to start learning? Driving a manual car takes practice and patience, but you’ll find that the skill comes in handy often. Before you get started, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind:

  • Find a set of instructions on how to drive a 5-speed. Read the instructions carefully and become familiar with all the steps prior to getting behind the wheel.
  • Take some time to familiarize yourself with the car. Just sitting in the driver’s seat for a while will make you feel more comfortable and confident.
  • Find a remote location for your practice sessions. Learning how to drive a stick shift is a slow process and requires long stretches of deserted roadway. Dirt roads or empty parking lots are perfect locations.
  • Bring a friend to help. An experienced driver can offer helpful tips about driving a manual car, and it’s fun to share a laugh along the way.
  • When you’re first leaning to drive a 5-speed, avoid hills. The balance of clutch and gas is different when starting on a hill, and this can be a challenge for beginners.

Most of all, try to be patient and keep your sense of humor. A good attitude goes a long way when you’re learning to drive manual cars.
