Tips on Valuing Older Cars
- Unless you are a dealer and have a dealer license and account with Kelley Blue Book or NADA, the prices you see will be slightly higher than the prices for dealers. Both Kelley Blue Book and NADA have a dealer version that allows for room in the price range for reconditioning costs and repairs to an older car before it can be put on the lot for sale.
- Get as much history on the older vehicle as you can. Ask the owner for records, including repair records and even the original bill of sale if possible.
- If you’re selling an older vehicle, when valuing your older car, use Manheim Gold and their poor, fair, good, and excellent guide. Be honest about the condition of your car.
- Old cars owned by celebrities both local and worldwide will bring a much higher price than the old car values you’ll get from any of the sources listed here. Manheim Gold has a "Celebrity-Owned" section to guide you.
- Visit auto auctions in your area that are geared toward older cars and see what prices sellers have set. What are buyers willing to pay at these auctions?
- There are different values for restored old cars and reconditioned old cars. A restored value will be higher, as the restorer will restore the vehicle like it was when it was new. Reconditioned cars often have parts that were not part of the original vehicle but can still be valuable.
- If you want to restore or recondition an old car on your own, do some research on the Internet and only buy from trusted companies.
- Join a classic car club in your area to find out more about unique cars and older car values.
